Experiences of agency nurses regarding their placement in private hospitals in East London, Eastern Cape

The general Australian workforce is becoming increasingly reliant on agency staff due to the diminishing of full-time jobs and the rise in part-time jobs since the recession of 1991-1992. This pattern is also seen in Western countries such as America and the United Kingdom (Peerson et al., 2002:505). The excessive costs of health service adopting a 100% staffing model has created the use of agency nursing to help meet fluctuating and unpredictable health care demands in Australia and overseas; agency staff are used to meet the shortfalls in staff-patient ratios (Peerson et al., 2002:505). Hurst & Smith (2011:287) agree that agency nurse staffing form a large part of the health service in the UK and state that this was unlikely to change because of recruitment and retention problems, high absenteeism, and staff wanting to work casually. In their study, they identified three types of agency nurses: A bank nurse – the hospital’s own employees or those supplied by NHS Professionals, who work when required, usually at short notice; agency nurses provided by commercial organisations, who are equally flexible but less familiar with the ward patients and procedures; and permanent ward staff working paid overtime. In South Africa, this also remains a problem in public and private institutions. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that the minimum ratio for nurses to population is 200:100 000 or 500 people per nurse. According to South African Nursing Council statistics of nursing manpower as at the end of 2008, South Africa has 437 nurses for every 100 000 people. This assumed that all nurses registered with SANC are working in South Africa at the time. Therefore, if the assumed number of staff not working in South Africa is subtracted, the ratio can increase to between 600 and 678 people per nurse (WHO, 2006). Joubert (2009:2) shows that a shortage of nurses contributes to deaths in hospitals in South Africa that would otherwise have been avoidable. The use of agency staff is becoming an appropriate means of providing cost-effectiveness and flexibility to staffing needs

The efficacy and safety of adrenergic blockade post burn injury: a systematic review and meta-analysis

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND The hypermetabolic state after severe burns is a major problem that can lead to several pathophysiologic changes and produce multiple sequelae. Adrenergic blockade has been widely used to reverse these changes and improve outcomes in burned patients but has not been rigorously evaluated. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the efficacy and safety of the use of adrenergic blockade after burn injury

© 2016 Bordignon, Otis, Georgievski, Peters, Strachan, Muller, and Tamin. Objective - The main objective was to determine whether information literacy (IL) learning objects (LOs) impact student IL competency, specifically in a foundational first year English composition course. The primary research question was: What is the effectiveness of IL LOs compared to face-to-face instruction in terms of students\u27 skill acquisition? Methods - The methods involved testing student IL competency through a multiple-choice test given pre- and post-IL intervention. Effectiveness was measured by assessing whether IL competency improves after exposure to one of two interventions: online IL LOs or face-to-face librarian-led workshop. Over two semesters, equal sections of the course were tested for each of these interventions. For the IL LOs group, students first completed a pre-test, then they worked independently through three online IL LOs. The three IL LOs were videos comprised of animation, screen casting, and video capture on these topics: Finding Articles at Seneca Libraries (hereafter referred to as Finding Articles), Finding Articles on Current Issues, and Popular and Scholarly Sources. The students were then given the same test again. For the face-to-face group, the pre- and post-tests were also required for the same number of sections. This study was conducted under institutional ethics approval. Results - Descriptive analysis revealed student test scores increased for both interventions, IL LOs and face-to-face. Test scores increased, on average, between 14 to 37%. In comparing post-tests, results revealed a statistically significant difference only with the first topic, Finding Articles. In this case, the IL LOs (video) group outperformed the face-to-face group by at least 10%. No significance, in terms of performance from pre- and post-test scores, was found for the other two topics. Conclusion - Both IL LO and face-to-face library led workshop interventions had a positive impact on students\u27 IL skill acquisition as evidenced by an overall increase in average test scores. One IL LO on Finding Articles significantly outperformed the face-to-face class equivalent. Further study is needed to track individual student performance

The winner takes it all : outperformance drives subsequent flows in South African unit trust funds

The relationship between unit trust (mutual fund) performance and subsequent investment flows into and out of funds has been the focus of many international studies. Emerging markets, which are characterised by higher risk, weaker institutions, volatile economies and fewer participants, provide an attractive opportunity to examine the flow-performance problem in the context of higher arbitrage costs. This study builds on the findings in the literature of the flowperformance relationship and aims to examine in more detail, and to quantify, the inflow into funds which outperform. The flow-performance relationship is important for investment businesses to understand because of the significant implications this has on the profitability of funds. The research applies a portfolio time-series methodology to Morningstar’s South African fund data, using a buy-and-hold analysis. Two unit trust categories are tested, namely General Equity and Multiasset High Equity funds, and within each category, single manager funds and fund of funds are tested separately. Funds are ranked by their past performance over an optimised 14- month look-back period, and assigned into quintiles. Net flows into each fund in the subsequent quarter are then determined, and the process rolled over on a quarterly basis from 2000 to 2015. We find convincing evidence from an emerging market perspective that equity funds need to perform in the top quintile to attract funds, and observe that relative performance to peers is more important to investors than performance relative to other benchmarks. One additional inference is that the South African unit trust industry is set to face consolidation.http://www.tandfonline.com/loi/riaj202019-01-30am2018Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS

    ASPOD modifications of 1993-1994

ASPOD, Autonomous Space Processors for Orbital Debris, provides a unique way of collecting the space debris that has built up over the past 37 years. For the past several years, ASPOD has gone through several different modifications. This year's concentrations were on the solar cutting array, the solar tracker, the earth based main frame/tilt table, the controls for the two robotic arms, and accurate autocad drawings of ASPOD. This final report contains the reports written by the students who worked on the ASPOD project this year
